Indications

  • Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
  • Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
  • Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis

Pharmacology

  • Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
  • Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
  • Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
  • Pediatric dosage: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily (6-14 years), 4 mg tablet (2-5 years), 4 mg oral granules (6 months-5 years)
  • Safety and efficacy established in pediatric patients with asthma 6 months to 14 years of age
  • No dosage adjustment required for mild-to-moderate hepatic or renal insufficiency
  • Elderly use: No dosage adjustment required

Interaction

  • No clinically important effects with commonly prescribed drugs
  • Appropriate clinical monitoring when co-administered with potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of this product

Side Effects

  • Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting
  • Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle complaints, seizure
  • Rare: Angioedema, memory loss, pulmonary eosinophilia, suicidal tendencies, tremor

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Caution advised when given to a nursing mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Not for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
  • Appropriate rescue medication should be available
  • Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
  • Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment and management of exercise induced bronchospasm
  • Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity

Overdose Effects

  • Supportive measures suggested in the event of overdose
