Indications
- Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma
- Acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB)
- Relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR): Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis
Pharmacology
- Selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist
- Inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor (CysLT1)
- Correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily
- Pediatric dosage: Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily (6-14 years), 4 mg tablet (2-5 years), 4 mg oral granules (6 months-5 years)
- Safety and efficacy established in pediatric patients with asthma 6 months to 14 years of age
- No dosage adjustment required for mild-to-moderate hepatic or renal insufficiency
- Elderly use: No dosage adjustment required
Interaction
- No clinically important effects with commonly prescribed drugs
- Appropriate clinical monitoring when co-administered with potent cytochrome P450 enzyme inducers
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of this product
Side Effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, vomiting
- Uncommon: Anxiety, depression, dizziness, dry mouth, muscle complaints, seizure
- Rare: Angioedema, memory loss, pulmonary eosinophilia, suicidal tendencies, tremor
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution advised when given to a nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Not for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Appropriate rescue medication should be available
- Not to be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
- Not to be used as monotherapy for the treatment and management of exercise induced bronchospasm
- Caution in patients with known aspirin sensitivity
