Indications

  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Prophylaxis of urinary tract infections
  • Susceptible strains of bacteria

Pharmacology

  • Highly soluble in urine
  • Imparts a brown color to urine
  • Inactivates or alters bacterial ribosomal proteins
  • Active against various gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria

Dosage

  • Nitrofurantoin tablet for adults
  • Nitrofurantoin capsule for adults
  • Nitrofurantoin SR capsule for adults and children over 12 years
  • Nitrofurantoin suspension for children
  • Different dosage recommendations for uncomplicated urinary tract infections, long-term suppressive therapy, acute uncomplicated UTIs, prophylaxis, and genitourinary surgical prophylaxis

Administration

  • Nitrofurantoin should be taken with food

Interaction

  • Interacts with antacids containing Magnesium Trisilicate
  • Interacts with uricosuric drugs like Probenecid and Sulfinpyrazone

Contraindications

  • Anuria
  • Oliguria
  • Significant impairment of renal function
  • Pregnancy at 38-42 weeks, during labor and delivery
  • Known hypersensitivity to Nitrofurantoin

Pregnancy & Lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Discontinue if pulmonary reactions occur
  • Avoid taking antacid preparations containing magnesium trisilicate while taking Nitrofurantoin

Overdose Effects

  • Occasional incidents of acute overdosage without specific symptoms
  • Induction of emesis is recommended
