Indications

  • Prophylaxis of organ rejection in kidney transplant in adult patients
  • Prophylaxis of organ rejection in pediatric patients 5 years of age and older

Pharmacology

  • Mycophenolic acid delayed-release tablets
  • Enteric coated formulation of mycophenolate sodium
  • Immunosuppressive agent
  • Inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase
  • Cytostatic effects on lymphocytes
  • Prevents acute rejection of kidney and heart allotransplantation
  • Decreases antibody production

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dose of Mycophenolic acid in adult kidney transplant patients is 720 mg administered twice daily (1440 mg total daily dose)
  • Recommended dose of Mycophenolic acid in pediatric kidney transplant patients is 400 mg/m2 BSA administered twice daily

Interaction

  • Caution with concomitant administration of Antacids, Azathioprine, Cyclosporin, Rifampin, Sevelamer, Cholestyramine, Acyclovir, Metronidazole, Hormonal contraceptives

Contraindications

  • Not to be used interchangeably with Mycophenolate mofetil tablets and capsules without physician supervision

Side Effects

  • Common adverse reactions include anemia, leukopenia, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, dyspepsia, urinary tract infection, CMV infection, insomnia, postoperative pain

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category D, can cause fetal harm
  • Discontinue Mycophenolic acid or nursing while on treatment or within 6 weeks after stopping therapy
  • Consider the drug's importance to the mother

Precautions & Warnings

  • Used with caution due to potential embryofetal toxicity
  • Can increase viral infections
  • May cause blood dyscrasias including pure red cell aplasia
  • Risk of serious GI tract complications
  • May increase the risk of developing lymphomas and other malignancies, particularly of the skin
  • Avoid use of live vaccines during treatment
