Description
- Flindof is used to treat bronchial asthma, bronchospasm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component.
Dosage & Administration
- 200 mg tablet for elderly, two or three times daily
- 400 mg tablet for adults, two or three times daily or as prescribed by the physician
- For children: >12 years of age: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily, 6-12 years of age: 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily
Pharmacology
- Doxophylline selectively inhibits phosphodiesterase 4, relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, and inhibits platelet activating factor (PAF) and generation of leukotriene production.
Interaction
- Should not be administered with other xanthine preparations, limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food, exercise caution with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs, and be aware of drug-drug interactions that may affect hepatic clearance.
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives, patients with acute myocardial infarction, hypotension, and during lactation.
Side Effects
- Nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, headache, irritability, insomnia, tachycardia, extrasystoles, tachypnea, hyperglycemia, albuminuria, severe cardiac arrhythmias, tonic-clonic seizure.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy and lactation should be evaluated carefully based on the risk-benefit ratio, contraindicated during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduce dosage in factors affecting hepatic clearance, monitor blood levels in certain conditions, use caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, and renal impairment.
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias, tonic-clonic seizure, requires discontinuation of treatment, no specific antidote.
