Indications

  • Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Pharmacology

  • Tamsulosin is a selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
  • Improves urine flow rate
  • Reduces symptoms of BPH
  • Absorption is 90% complete following oral administration under fasting conditions
  • Metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver

Dosage & Administration

  • Daily dosage of Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg
  • May be increased to Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.8 mg if necessary
  • To be taken after meal at night
  • Capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water

Interaction

  • Concurrent administration of other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists could lead to hypotensive effects
  • No interactions observed with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine
  • Cimetidine may increase plasma levels while frusemide may decrease levels
  • No interactions at the level of hepatic metabolism observed with certain drugs

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin hydrochloride
  • History of orthostatic hypotension
  • Severe hepatic insufficiency

  • Abnormal ejaculation
  • Headache
  • Asthenia
  • Postural hypotension
  • Palpitations

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Transient postural symptoms may occur after the first dose
  • Use in patients with micturition syncope is not advised
  • Effects on ability to drive and use machines are unknown

Overdose Effects

  • Acute hypotension likely to occur after overdosage
  • Cardiovascular support should be given
  • Renal function should be monitored
  • General supportive measures should be applied
