Description
- Oral suspension for the relief of symptoms associated with gastric reflux, heartburn, indigestion, and flatulence
Indications
- Gastric reflux

- Epigastric and retrosternal distress associated with gastric reflux
Pharmacology
- Combination of two antacids (Calcium carbonate and Sodium bicarbonate) and an alginate (Sodium alginate)
- Works by neutralizing excess stomach acid and forming a protective barrier over the stomach contents
DosageAdministration
- Adult and children over 12 years: 10-20 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
- Children 6 to 12 years: 5-10 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day
- Chewable Tablet: 2-4 tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day for adults and children over 12 years
- Not recommended for children under 6 years
- No dose modifications necessary for elderly
- Chewable tablets for children under 12 years should be given only on medical advice
Interaction
- Consider a time-interval of 2 hours between Gavisol intake and the administration of certain other medicinal products
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or excipients
SideEffects
- Possible side effects include constipation, flatulence, stomach cramps, belching, and a sensation of swelling if a large dose is taken

- Clinically indicated for use during pregnancy if needed
- Safe for use during breastfeeding
- Pre-clinical investigations indicate no negative effect on parental or offspring fertility or reproduction
PrecautionsWarnings
- Each 20 ml of dose contains 254.5 mg of sodium, which should be considered for patients on a highly restricted salt diet
- Contains 260 mg of calcium, so care is needed for patients with hypercalcaemia and nephrocalcinosis
- Not generally recommended for children under 12 years except on medical advice
- Considerations for sodium content, hypercalcaemia, and aspartame content
- Gavisol can mask symptoms of underlying medical conditions and should not be used in patients with impaired renal function/insufficiency and hypophosphatemia
