Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Pharmacology
- Bronchodilator
- Phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor
- Selective inhibition of adenosine A1 and A2 receptors
- Inhibition of platelet activating factor (PAF) and leukotriene production
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for Elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for Adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for Children: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet for >12 years, 6-9 mg/kg for 6-12 years, 400 mg Doxophylline SR tablet if required daily dosage is 400 mg
Interaction
- Should not be administered with other xanthine preparations
- Limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food
- Exercise caution with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
- Concurrent administration with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine, propanolol, phenytoin, other anticonvulsants, and cigarette smoking
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- During lactation

- Epigastric pain
- Headache
- Irritability
- Insomnia
- Tachycardia
- Extrasystoles
- Tachypnea
- Hyperglycemia (rare)
- Albuminuria (rare)
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias (in case of overdose)
- Tonic-clonic seizure (in case of overdose)
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Animal tests show no interference with pre and postnatal growth
- Use during pregnancy should be evaluated case by case
- Contraindicated during lactation
- No effect on ability to drive and use machines
Precautions & Warnings
- Factors may reduce hepatic clearance of xanthine derivatives
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, and renal impairment
- Monitoring of blood levels recommended in certain cases
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias
- Tonic-clonic seizure
- No specific antidote
- Symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse
