Indications
- Reversible bronchospasm associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Reversible airway obstruction in asthma
- Treatment of chronic reversible airway obstruction
Pharmacology
Ipratropium Bromide is a quaternary ammonium compound with anticholinergic properties.
Dosage
- Nebuliser Solution:
- Adults and children over 12 years: 250-500 micrograms 3 to 4 times daily
- Children 6-12 years: 250 micrograms up to 1 mg daily
- Children 0-5 years (for acute asthma): 125-250 micrograms up to 1 mg daily
- Adult inhaler dose: 1-2 puffs 3 or 4 times daily
Administration
- Nebuliser Solution: Should be combined with a short-acting beta 2-agonist in the same nebulizer chamber.

Interaction
Ipramid has been used concomitantly with sympathomimetic bronchodilators, methylxanthines, steroids without adverse reactions.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to atropine or its derivatives
- Hypersensitivity to Ipratropium or its derivative
- Hypersensitivity to soya lecithin or related food products such as soybean, lecithin and peanut
Side Effects
- Nebuliser Solution:
- Common: Headache, Dizziness, Cough, Dryness of mouth, Vomiting
- Uncommon: Urticaria, Tachycardia, Skin rash
- Inhalation induced bronchospasm
- Inhaler:
- Potentially life-threatening effects are rare
- Severe/Irreversible adverse effects are not reported
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safety during human pregnancy not established. Caution during nursing.
Precautions & Warnings
- Nebuliser Solution: Use under close medical supervision, caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or prostatic hyperplasia
- Inhaler: Temporary blurring of vision, Avoid spraying into eyes, Not indicated for initial treatment of acute episodes
Overdose Effects
Acute overdosage by inhalation is unlikely as Ipramid is not well absorbed systemically.
