Indications

  • Treatment of single or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms
  • Treatment of infections resistant to other antibiotics
  • Treatment of systemic infections, respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gastrointestinal infections, biliary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, bone and joint infections, pelvic infections, eye-ear-nose-throat infections, and gonorrhea

Pharmacology

  • Synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent
  • Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic bacteria
  • Bactericidal action through interference with DNA gyrase
  • Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
  • Widely distributed into body tissues and fluids
  • Half-life of about 3.5 hours
  • Excretion in urine

Dosage

  • Adult dosage range from 100-750mg twice daily depending on infection
  • Specific dosage for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and gonorrhea
  • Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
  • No dosage adjustment for elderly
  • Not recommended for use in children due to potential arthropathy

Administration

  • Instructions for use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion

Interaction

  • Avoid concurrent administration with certain antacids or products containing magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron, or zinc
  • Do not take concurrently with milk or dairy products

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

Side Effects

  • Gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, joint pain, photosensitivity, increase in liver enzymes, and risk of hypoglycemia and mental health adverse effects

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to potential arthropathy
  • Not recommended for use in nursing mothers

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders or predisposition to seizures and convulsions

Use in Special Populations

  • Not a drug of first choice in pediatric population

Overdose Effects

  • May lead to seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment, crystalluria, and reversible renal toxicity

Therapeutic Class

  • Anti-diarrheal antimicrobial drugs
