Indications

Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum penicillin
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
- Stable in the presence of gastric acid
- Rapidly absorbed after oral administration
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250mg three times daily
- Increased adult dosage for severe infections: 500mg three times daily
- Children dosage (up to 10 years of age): 125mg three times daily
- Increased children dosage for severe infections: 250mg three times daily
- Recommended dosage for different infections like severe or recurrent purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea
- Dosage adjustment for renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered by adding to milk, fruit juice, water
Interaction
- Concurrent use of Avlomox and Probenecid may result in increased and prolonged blood levels of Avlomox
- May affect the gut flora, leading to lower estrogen reabsorption and reduced efficacy of combined oral estrogen/progesterone contraceptives
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects
- Possible side effects: diarrhea, indigestion, rash
- Rarely reported: pseudo-membranous colitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA pregnancy category of Amoxicillin is B
- Caution should be exercised when administered to a lactating mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Possibility of superinfections with mycotic or bacterial pathogens should be kept in mind
- Discontinue if superinfections occur and institute appropriate therapy
