Description

Indications
- Ear, nose and throat infections (e.g. otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis)
- Lower respiratory tract infections (e.g. pneumonia, bronchitis, lung abscess)
- Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g. cellulitis, abscess)
- Genito-urinary tract infections
- Venereal disease (e.g. gonorrhoea)
- Dental abscess
- H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease
Pharmacology
- Effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Inhibition of biosynthesis of cell wall
- Widely distributed in body tissues and fluids
- Peak plasma concentration reached within 1 to 2 hours
Dosage
- Adult dosage: 250mg-500mg three times daily
- Children dosage: 125mg-250mg three times daily
- Specific dosage for purulent respiratory infection, otitis media, pneumonia, dental abscess, urinary tract infections, and gonorrhoea
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
Administration
- Reconstituted suspension can be administered with milk, fruit juice, or water
Interaction
- Concurrent use with Probenecid may increase and prolong blood levels
- May affect gut flora and estrogen reabsorption
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects such as diarrhea, indigestion, and rash
- Rare reports of pseudo-membranous colitis
