Indications

  • Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

  • Cephradine is a semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
  • Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
  • Inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria
  • Bactericidal action due to lysis of bacteria from external osmotic pressure

Dosage & Administration

  • Oral administration for adults
  • Oral administration for children
  • Oral administration for elderly
  • Injectable administration for adults
  • Injectable administration for children

Interaction

  • Increased risk of kidney damage with concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs
  • Enhanced possibility of renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid

Contraindications

  • Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prolonged use may result in development of superinfection
  • Careful administration to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
  • Potential positive result in Coombs' testing
  • Potential false positive urine glucose result
  • Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
  • Contains lactose, caution in patients with specific hereditary problems

Use in Special Populations

  • Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment not on haemodialysis
  • Recommended doses for patients on chronic, intermittent haemodialysis
  • Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
  • Monitoring required throughout treatment of chronic urinary tract infections

Overdose Effects

  • Non-specific symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
  • Mainly supportive treatment
  • Gastric lavage necessary for large ingestions
