Indications
- Treatment of infections caused by sensitive Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of urinary tract infections
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
Pharmacology
- Cephradine is a semisynthetic broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against both gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits cross-linking process in the cell wall of bacteria
- Bactericidal action due to lysis of bacteria from external osmotic pressure
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration for adults
- Oral administration for children
- Oral administration for elderly
- Injectable administration for adults
- Injectable administration for children
Interaction
- Increased risk of kidney damage with concomitant use of nephrotoxic drugs
- Enhanced possibility of renal toxicity with diuretics and probenecid
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to cephalosporins

- No demonstrated teratogenicity in animal studies
- Excretion in breast milk
- Caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Prolonged use may result in development of superinfection
- Careful administration to patients hypersensitive to penicillins
- Potential positive result in Coombs' testing
- Potential false positive urine glucose result
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
- Contains lactose, caution in patients with specific hereditary problems
Use in Special Populations
- Recommended doses for patients with renal impairment not on haemodialysis
- Recommended doses for patients on chronic, intermittent haemodialysis
- Higher doses may be required for chronic or severe infections
- Monitoring required throughout treatment of chronic urinary tract infections
Overdose Effects
- Non-specific symptoms include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea
- Mainly supportive treatment
- Gastric lavage necessary for large ingestions
