Medicine Details

Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) such as otitis media
  • Treatment of lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis
  • Treatment of urinary tract infections (UTI)
  • Clinical efficacy against various pathogens including Streptococcus pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, etc.

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal action against a broad spectrum of gram positive and gram negative bacteria
  • Interference with the synthesis of bacterial cell wall
  • High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
  • Approximately 40% to 50% absorption with or without food

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual course of treatment is 7 days
  • Recommended adult dosage of 200-400 mg daily for upper respiratory tract infections (URTI)
  • Recommended dosage for children in different age groups
  • Special dosage for typhoid treatment

Interaction

  • Possible increase in prothrombin times in some patients receiving anticoagulant therapy

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics

Side Effects

  • Mild and self limiting adverse reactions observed in clinical trials
  • Common gastrointestinal disturbances including diarrhea and stool changes
  • Less frequent gastrointestinal side-effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, etc.
  • Central nervous system side-effects like headache and dizziness

  • Hematological and clinical chemistry reactions
  • Miscellaneous reactions including genital pruritis and vaginitis

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Limited studies in pregnant women
  • Caution advised for use during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
  • Potential partial cross-allergenicity with penicillins
  • Need for caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
  • Altered normal flora of the colon and potential overgrowth of clostridia

Overdose Effects

  • Possible gastric lavage for overdose
  • No specific antidote available
  • Limited removal from circulation by dialysis
