Absorption
- About 40% to 50% absorption with or without food
Recommended Adult Dosage
- 200-400 mg daily
Recommended Children Dosage
- 8 mg/kg/day
- Dosage based on age and weight
Dosage in Renal Impairment
- Adjust dosage in severe renal impairment
- Normal dose may be given in patients with creatinine clearances of 20 ml/min or greater
Interaction with Anticoagulants
- Increases in prothrombin times noted in some patients
Hypersensitivity Reactions
- Rash
- Pruritis
- Urticaria
- Drug fever
- Arthralgia
Hematological and Clinical Chemistry Reactions
- Thrombocytopenia
- Leukopenia
- Eosinophilia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
Pregnancy
- Caution advised, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
Lactation
- Caution advised, not known if excreted in human milk
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Precautions
- Caution in patients with known hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Given with caution to penicillin-sensitive patients
Overdose Effects
- No specific antidote exists
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
