Indications

  • Treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with COPD
  • Treatment of chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema

Description

  • Long-acting β2-adrenergic agonist
  • Acts as a bronchodilator
  • Stimulation of intracellular adenyl cyclase
  • Relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended once-daily inhalation
  • Different dosage strengths available (75 mcg, 150 mcg, 300 mcg)
  • Administered orally inhaled route only

Interaction

  • Interactions with Adrenergic Drugs, Xanthine Derivatives, Steroids, or Diuretics
  • Caution with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, or drugs prolonging the QTc interval
  • Interference with beta-blockers

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with asthma without long-term asthma control medication
  • Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Indacaterol or its ingredients

Side Effects

  • Common side effects include cough, nasopharyngitis, headache, nausea, and oropharyngeal pain
  • Rare instances of hypersensitivity reactions, paradoxical bronchospasm, tachycardia, pruritis, and dizziness

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category C
  • Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus
  • Caution in nursing women due to potential excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Rare occurrence of serious breathing problems in people with asthma similar to salmeterol
  • Not shown to be safe or effective to treat asthma
  • Not approved for asthma treatment

Overdose Effects

  • Signs and symptoms of excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation
  • Potential occurrence of serious symptoms like angina, hypertension or hypotension, tachycardia, arrhythmias, nervousness, headache, tremor, and more
  • Cardiac arrest and death may be associated with overdose
