Indications
- Treatment of viral infections due to Herpes simplex virus (type I & II) and Varicella zoster virus
- Treatment of Herpes simplex virus infections of the skin and mucous membranes
- Prophylaxis of Herpes simplex infections in immunocompromised patients
Mode of Action
- Interferes with DNA synthesis
- Inhibits viral replication
- Converted to Aciclovir Triphosphate for antiviral activity
Dosage & Administration
- 200 mg 5 times daily for initial herpes simplex
- 400 mg 5 times daily for immunocompromised patients
- 200 mg 4 times daily for prevention of recurrence of herpes simplex
- 200 to 400 mg 4 times daily for prophylactic treatment of herpes simplex in the immunocompromised patients
- 800 mg 4 times daily for 5 days for chicken pox in adults
- 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days for herpes zoster (shingles)
- Renal impairment: doses reduction recommended
Interaction
- Probenecid reduces Aciclovir excretion and increases plasma concentration
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Aciclovir

Precautions & Warnings
- Administered with caution in renal impairment patients
- Doses should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance
- Monitor neutrophil count in neonates
