Indications
- Treatment of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTI)

Pharmacology
- Third generation semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic
- Oral administration
- Bactericidal against a broad spectrum of bacteria
- Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
- High stability in the presence of Beta-lactamase enzyme
- Approximately 40-50% absorption whether administered with or without food
Dosage & Administration
- Usual course of treatment is 7 days
- Recommended adult dosage: 200-400 mg daily
- Recommended dosage for children: 8 mg/kg/day
- Different dosages for different age groups
- Recommended dosage for typhoid treatment
Interaction
- Potential increases in prothrombin times
- Careful administration in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics
Side Effects
- Mild and self-limiting adverse reactions
- Frequent gastrointestinal disturbances
- Central nervous system effects: headache and dizziness
- Hypersensitivity reactions: rash, pruritis, urticaria
- Hematological and clinical chemistry effects: thrombocytopenia, leukopenia
- Mild transient change in liver and renal function tests
- Miscellaneous: genital pruritis and vaginitis
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed
- Caution advised in nursing women
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with hypersensitivity to other drugs
- Caution in penicillin-sensitive patients
- Administration with caution in patients with markedly impaired renal function
- Potential alteration of normal flora of the colon
Overdose Effects
- Gastric Lavage may be indicated
- No specific antidote exists
- Not significantly removed from circulation by dialysis
