Indications
- Adjunct to diet and exercise for type 2 diabetes mellitus
- Reduction of cardiovascular death in type 2 diabetes with established cardiovascular disease
Pharmacology
Sodium glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor
Dosage and Administration
Recommended dose of 10 mg once daily, may be increased to 25 mg once daily
Interactions
- Diuretics resulting in increased urine volume
- Increased risk of hypoglycemia with insulin or insulin secretagogues
- SGLT2 inhibitors leading to positive urine glucose tests
- Unreliable 1,5-AG assay for glycemic control
Contraindications
- Serious hypersensitivity reaction to Empagliflozin or its ingredients
- Severe renal impairment
- End-stage renal disease or dialysis

- Increased thirstiness
Pregnancy and Lactation
Use during pregnancy if benefit justifies risk, not recommended during breastfeeding
Precautions and Warnings
Assessment of renal function recommended, not initiated in patients with eGFR less than 45 ml/min/1.73 m2
Overdose Effects
Employ usual supportive measures, hemodialysis not studied for removal
