Mode of Action

  • Relaxation of vascular smooth muscle
  • Vasodilator effect
  • Reduction of venous return to the heart
  • Reduction of left ventricular enddiastolic pressure
  • Reduction of systemic vascular resistance
  • Reduction of arterial pressure

Dosage

  • 1-2 metered sprays at the onset of an attack
  • Maximum 3 metered sprays within 15 minutes
  • Prophylactic use 5-10 minutes prior to activities

Administration

  • Carry at all times
  • Not for routine use
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages
  • Avoid sildenafil, vardenafil, or tadalafil
  • Keep away from children
  • Sitting down during administration
  • Not shaking the container
  • Administering the spray under the tongue
  • Avoid swallowing immediately after administration
  • Repeat administration if needed

Interaction

  • Severe hypotension and collapse with alcohol
  • Enhanced bioavailability of dihydroergotamine with oral use
  • Orthostatic hypotension with combined use of certain drugs

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to nitrates
  • Hypotension, hypovolaemia, severe anaemia
  • Cerebral haemorrhage, brain trauma, mitral stenosis
  • Angina caused by hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy
  • Concomitant administration of phosphodiesterase inhibitors for erectile dysfunction
