- Bronchodilator
- Methyl xanthine derivatives
Description
- Doxophylline is used to treat indications such as bronchial asthma, bronchospasm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component.
- Doxophylline has a novel bronchodilating mechanism of action by selectively inhibiting phosphodiesterase 4, relaxing bronchial smooth muscle, and decreasing affinities toward adenosine A1 and A2 receptors for a better safety profile.
- Dosage and administration vary for elderly, adults, and children based on tablet or syrup forms and body weight considerations.
- It's contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives, patients with acute myocardial infarction, hypotension, and during lactation.
- Possible side effects may include nausea, vomiting, epigastric pain, headache, insomnia, tachycardia, and in rare cases hyperglycemia or albuminuria, with severe cardiac arrhythmias and tonic-clonic seizures in case of overdose.
- Use during pregnancy and lactation requires careful evaluation, and the product should be stored in a dry place away from light and heat, out of the reach of children, and used only on prescription of a specialist physician.
