Indications

  • Treatment of functional symptoms of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Pharmacology

  • Selective alpha1 adrenoceptor blocking agent
  • Improvement in urine flow rate
  • Reduction in symptoms of BPH
  • Complete absorption following oral administration
  • Extensively metabolized by cytochrome P 450 enzymes

Dosage & Administration

  • Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg (one capsule) daily
  • Dose may be increased to 0.8 mg once daily after 2 to 4 weeks
  • Take after meal at night
  • Swallow whole with a glass of water
  • Do not crush or chew

Interaction

  • Concurrent administration with other alfa1-adrenoceptor antagonists
  • No interactions with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine
  • Cimetidine may raise plasma levels
  • Frusemide may decrease plasma levels
  • Increased elimination rate with diclofenac and warfarin

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to tamsulosin hydrochloride
  • History of orthostatic hypotension
  • Severe hepatic insufficiency

Precautions & Warnings

  • Transient postural symptoms may occur after the first dose
  • Use in patients with micturition syncope is not advised

Overdose Effects

  • Acute hypotension likely after overdosage
  • Cardiovascular support may be required
  • Renal function should be monitored
  • General supportive measures applied
