Description
- Used to treat Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
- Structurally differs from Theophylline
- Selectively inhibits phosphodiesterase 4
- Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle
- Decreased affinities toward adenosine A1 and A2 receptors
- Reported to inhibit platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibits generation of leukotriene production
- Elderly dosage: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Adults dosage: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Children's dosage: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet
- Required daily dose of 400 mg can be taken as a sustained-release tablet
- Should not be administered with other xanthine preparations
- Limit consumption of beverages and food containing caffeine
- Caution in administering with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
- Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Contraindicated in patients with acute myocardial infarction, hypotension, and during lactation
- Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, headache, tachycardia, and insomnia
- Animal tests show no interference with pre and postnatal growth
- Effects during pregnancy should be evaluated carefully on a case-by-case basis
- Contraindicated during lactation
- Does not affect the ability to drive or use machines
- May reduce hepatic clearance in certain conditions
- Caution in administering to patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, and elderly patients
- No risk of addiction or dependence
- Overdose may lead to severe cardiac arrhythmias and tonic-clonic seizures
- No specific antidote for overdose
