Indications
- Relief of dry (non-productive) cough
- Pre & post-operative cough sedation
- Acute cough of any etiology
- Whooping cough
- Cough due to acute lower respiratory tract infections
Pharmacology
- Acts directly on the brain's cough center to suppress cough
- Rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration
- Safe and non-sedating
- Sustained release tablet reaching maximum concentration within 9 hours
- Extremely protein-bound with a plasma elimination half-life of about 13 hours
- Active metabolites have antitussive action
Dosage & Administration
- Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablet: 2-3 tablets daily for adults
- Butamirate Citrate syrup: 15 ml 4 times daily for adults
- Butamirate Citrate 50 mg tablet: 1-2 tablets daily for adolescents over 12 years old
- Butamirate Citrate syrup: 5 ml 3 times daily for children (3-6 yrs)
- Butamirate Citrate syrup: 10 ml 3 times daily for children (6-12 yrs)
- Butamirate Citrate syrup: 15 ml 3 times daily for adolescents
- Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops: 0.50 ml 4 times daily for children (2 months - 1 yr)
- Butamirate Citrate pediatric drops: 0.75 ml 4 times daily for children (1-3 yrs)
Interaction
Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the active ingredient
Side Effects
- Good tolerance observed
- Adverse reactions such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and vertigo in rare cases, resolving after dose reduction or treatment withdrawal
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Caution advised during the remainder of pregnancy
- Benefits of administration during breastfeeding should be carefully weighed against the risks
Precautions & Warnings
- Suppresses the cough reflex
- Concomitant use with expectorants should be avoided
- Consult a doctor if the cough persists for more than 7 days (more than 3 days in children younger than 12 years of age)
Overdose Effects
Symptoms include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and hypotension
