Indications

  • Bronchial asthma
  • Bronchospasm
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component

Pharmacology

  • Selective inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4
  • Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle
  • Inhibition of platelet activating factor (PAF)
  • Decreased affinities toward adenosine A1 and A2 receptors

Dosage & Administration

  • Elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
  • Adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily
  • Children:
    • >12 years of age: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
    • 6-12 years of age: 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily

Interaction

  • Contraindicated with other xanthine preparations
  • Limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food
  • Caution with sympathomimetic drugs
  • Potential drug interactions with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine, propanolol, phenytoin, and other anticonvulsants

  • Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
  • Acute myocardial infarction
  • Hypotension
  • Lactation

  • Contraindicated during lactation
  • No interference with ability to drive and use machines

Precautions & Warnings

  • Factors reducing hepatic clearance
  • Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, elderly, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, liver disease, etc.
  • Monitoring recommended for certain patients

Overdose Effects

  • Severe cardiac arrhythmias
  • Tonic-clonic seizure
  • Symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse in case of overdose
