  • Hemorrhagic metrophathies and functional menometrorrhagias
  • Prophylaxis and antihemorrhagic therapy during tonsillectomy
  • Prophylaxis and antihemorrhagic therapy during maxillofacial operations
  • To promote the formation of a fibrin capsule to inhibit the growth of ovarian tumors
  • Interaction with Streptokinase & Urokinase
  • Known individual hypersensitivity to the product

Pharmacology

  • Preparation of tranexamic acid
  • Antifibrinolytic action
  • Inhibition of plasminogen activation
  • Low acute toxicity
  • Well absorbed by oral route
  • Excretion mainly by renal route
  • No interference with clotting processes
  • No tendency to thrombophilia

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual adult dose: 500-1000 mg 3 times daily
  • Mean recommended daily doses for prophylaxis: 0.5-1 gm orally, 500 mg by parenteral route
  • Therapeutic oral dose increases to 1-3 gm
  • Oral administration effect seen 15-30 minutes after
  • Intravenous and intramuscular treatment for children
  • No dosage reduction in elderly patients

Interaction

  • Incompatibility with solutions containing penicillins
  • Antagonism with thrombolytic drugs
  • Potential for increased thrombus formation with estrogen containing drugs
  • Avoid direct admixture with whole blood during transfusion

Contraindications

  • Thromboembolic disease
  • Arterial and venous thrombosis
  • Endocavitary hemorrhages
  • Serious kidney failure

Side Effects

  • Sense of fatigue
  • Conjunctival irritation
  • Nasal blockage
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Gastric pyrosis
  • Postural hypotension

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Should not be administered during known and presumed pregnancy
  • Passes into breast milk at a low concentration

Precautions & Warnings

  • Use in cases where there is hyperfibrinolysis
  • Prophylactic treatment must begin 24 hours before operation
  • Therapy of hemorrhages must be prolonged for at least 24 hours after manifestations have disappeared
  • Reduce doses in hematuria
  • Caution in subjects with renal or hepatic issues
