Composition
- Each tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU
- Each DX tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU
- Each effervescent tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP
Pharmacology
- Clinical evidence suggests usefulness for prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis
- Vitamin D essential for healthy bones and aids in Calcium absorption
- Stimulates bone formation and has synergistic effects on bone growth
Dosage & Administration
- One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician
- Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water and drink orally
- Taking in full stomach ensures better absorption
Interaction
- Thiazide diuretics reduce the urinary excretion of calcium
- Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
- Simultaneous treatment with ion exchange resins or laxatives may reduce gastrointestinal absorption of vitamin D
- Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations
Contraindications
- Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation
- Severe renal insufficiencies
- Concomitant digoxin therapy
Side Effects
- Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the GI tract
- May cause constipation, allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, and drowsiness
- Occasional skin rash reported with Vitamin D Supplements
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol during pregnancy
- Overdoses of calcium and vitamin D should be avoided
- No indications that vitamin D at therapeutic doses is teratogenic in humans
- Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk and should be considered when giving additional vitamin D to the child
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitoring of serum calcium levels and renal function during long-term treatment
- Caution in patients with impairment of renal function
- Caution in immobilized patients with osteoporosis
- Additional doses of calcium or vitamin D should be taken under close medical supervision
Overdose Effects
- May lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia
- Symptoms of hypercalcaemia may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disturbances, and more
- Treatment involves discontinuation of calcium, rehydration, and monitoring of serum electrolytes and renal function
