Composition

  • Each tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU
  • Each DX tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU
  • Each effervescent tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP

Pharmacology

  • Clinical evidence suggests usefulness for prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis
  • Vitamin D essential for healthy bones and aids in Calcium absorption
  • Stimulates bone formation and has synergistic effects on bone growth

Dosage & Administration

  • One tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician
  • Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water and drink orally
  • Taking in full stomach ensures better absorption

Interaction

  • Thiazide diuretics reduce the urinary excretion of calcium
  • Systemic corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption
  • Simultaneous treatment with ion exchange resins or laxatives may reduce gastrointestinal absorption of vitamin D
  • Calcium carbonate may interfere with the absorption of concomitantly administered tetracycline preparations

Contraindications

  • Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
  • Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
  • Hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation
  • Severe renal insufficiencies
  • Concomitant digoxin therapy

Side Effects

  • Orally administered Calcium Carbonate may be irritating to the GI tract
  • May cause constipation, allergic reactions, irregular heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, dry mouth, and drowsiness
  • Occasional skin rash reported with Vitamin D Supplements

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol during pregnancy
  • Overdoses of calcium and vitamin D should be avoided
  • No indications that vitamin D at therapeutic doses is teratogenic in humans
  • Calcium and vitamin D3 pass into breast milk and should be considered when giving additional vitamin D to the child

Precautions & Warnings

  • Monitoring of serum calcium levels and renal function during long-term treatment
  • Caution in patients with impairment of renal function
  • Caution in immobilized patients with osteoporosis
  • Additional doses of calcium or vitamin D should be taken under close medical supervision

Overdose Effects

  • May lead to hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcaemia
  • Symptoms of hypercalcaemia may include anorexia, thirst, nausea, vomiting, constipation, muscle weakness, fatigue, mental disturbances, and more
  • Treatment involves discontinuation of calcium, rehydration, and monitoring of serum electrolytes and renal function
