Indications

Description
- Exerts direct inhibitory effect upon the parasympathetic system
- Relaxing effect on smooth musculature

Pharmacology
- Non-selective muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist
- Binds with higher affinity to M1 subtype receptors
- Higher affinity for central muscarinic receptors in cerebral cortex
- Lower affinity for peripheral muscarinic receptors
- Modification of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor neurotransmission
- Enhanced dopamine release in the striatum
- Mechanism of action not fully elucidated
Dosage & Administration

Interaction

- Caution in hot weather, especially with other atropine-like drugs
- Consideration of hyperthermia in the presence of anhidrosis
- Risk of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
Overdose Effects
- Typical central symptoms of atropine intoxication
- Neuropsychiatric signs
- Progression to stupor, coma, paralysis, and death
- Treatment involves symptomatic and supportive therapy
- Gastric lavage or methods to limit absorption
- Administration of diazepam or short-acting barbiturate if CNS excitation is observed
