Description
- Bactin is a synthetic quinolone anti-infective agent indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by susceptible organisms. It has a broad spectrum of activity, including against gram-negative aerobic bacteria and some gram-positive aerobic bacteria. Bactin is available in different dosage forms such as tablets and IV infusion, and it is well-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Indications
- Treatment of single infection or mixed infections caused by two or more susceptible organisms
- Infections resistant to other antibiotics like Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins
- Infections of the urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts
- Gonorrhea, septicaemia, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, pelvic infections, and more
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal action resulting from interference with the enzyme DNA gyrase
- Broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria
- Rapid and well absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
Dosage
- Dosage range for adults is 100-750 mg twice daily
- Specific dosage for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and gonorrhea
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
- Different dosage for cystic fibrosis and extended-release tablets
- Duration of treatment depending upon the severity of infection and clinical response
Administration
- Instructions for the use of Ciprofloxacin IV infusion
- Precautions related to the administration with antacids and dairy products
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent administration with magnesium or aluminum containing antacids or sucralfate
- Products containing Calcium, Iron, Zinc, and dairy products may affect the absorption of Bactin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disturbances, central nervous system disturbances, hypersensitivity reactions, joint pain, photosensitivity, and transient increase in liver enzymes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use during pregnancy due to the potential risk of arthropathy in immature animals
- Not recommended for nursing mothers due to secretion in milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with CNS disorders and predisposition to seizures and convulsion
- Avoid concurrent administration with specific products and dairy products
Use in Special Populations
- Not a first choice drug in the pediatric population
Overdose Effects
- Seizures, hallucinations, confusion, abdominal discomfort, renal and hepatic impairment, crystalluria, haematuria, and reversible renal toxicity
