Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Pharmacology
- Novel bronchodilator
- Selective phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor
- Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle
- Inhibits platelet activating factor (PAF)
- Inhibits leukotriene production
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for elderly: 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for adults: 400 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for children over 12 years: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet two or three times daily
- Dosage for children 6-12 years: 6-9 mg/kg body weight two times daily
- Special release tablet for daily 400 mg dose
- Dosage as prescribed by the physician
Interaction
- Not to be administered with other xanthine preparations
- Limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food
- Caution with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
- Caution with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine, propanolol
- Potential impact on hepatic clearance by phenytoin, other anticonvulsants, cigarette smoking
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- During lactation

- Severe cardiac arrhythmias in case of overdose

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Animal tests show no interference with pre and postnatal growth
- Use during pregnancy to be carefully evaluated on risk-benefit ratio
- Contraindicated during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Factors affecting hepatic clearance may impact plasma levels
- Age
- Congestive cardiac decompensation
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- Severe liver disease
- Concomitant infections
- Monitoring of blood levels recommended in specific cases
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, renal impairment
- No risk of addiction or dependence
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias
- Tonic-clonic seizure
- Discontinuation of treatment may be required
- Symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse in case of overdose
