Pharmacology
- Pharmacodynamic Properties: Potent anti-inflammatory agent with profound immune system inhibition
- Pharmacokinetic Properties:
- Bioavailability: 82-89% following oral administration
- Absorption: Rapid, with maximum plasma concentration achieved around 1.5-2.3 hours
- Distribution: Widely distributed into tissues, crosses the blood-brain barrier and placental barrier
- Metabolism: In the liver to inactive metabolites
- Protein Binding: Approximately 77%
- Excretion: Secreted in breast milk, haemodializable
DosageAndAdministration
- Usual Range: 2-48 mg daily in divided doses
- Initial Dosage: 4-48 mg per day, adjusted based on disease severity
- Maintenance Dosage: Adjusted to lowest effective dose
- Multiple Sclerosis Treatment: 160 mg daily for a week, followed by 64 mg every other day for 1 month
- Alternate-Day Therapy: Twice the usual daily dose administered every other morning
