Indications
- Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections
- Treatment of respiratory tract infections
- Treatment of other infections (osteomyelitis, enteritis, endocarditis, urinary tract infection, meningitis, septicaemia)
- Prophylactic agent for major surgical procedures
Pharmacology
- Active against Gram-positive organisms including penicillinase producing strains
- Inhibition of bacterial cell wall formation
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Resistance to hydrolysis by penicillinase
- Gastric acid stability
- Activity against gram-positive bacteria
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults, children (2-10 years) and children under 2 years
- Parenteral administration for adults/elderly and children (2-10 years) and under 2 years
- Dosage adjustment for severe infections like osteomyelitis and endocarditis
Administration
- Oral doses administered 1 hour before meal
Interaction
- Concurrent use resulting in increased level of Flucloxacillin in blood
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side Effects
- Common gastrointestinal side effects (nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dyspepsia)
- Other reported side effects (rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice)
Pregnancy & Lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- No adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women
- Excretion in human milk
- Caution in lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with evidence of hepatic dysfunction
- Caution in patients with allergic diathesis
Use in Special Populations
- Reduction in dose or extension of dose interval in severe renal failure
