Indications
- Hypertension
- Renal Protection in Type-2 Diabetic Patients with Proteinuria
- Treatment of hypertension alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents
Pharmacology
- Non-peptide orally active angiotensin II receptor blocker
- Binds to AT1 receptor in various tissues
- Reduces vasoconstriction and aldosterone release
Dosage & Administration
- Usual starting and maintenance dose of 50 mg once daily
- Antihypertensive effect using 50 mg once daily may be inadequate
- Dosage range from 25 mg to 100 mg daily
- Different starting dose for patients with intravascular volume-depletion
- Dosage for patients upto 75 years
- Dosage for patients over 75 years
Interaction
- Reduction of active metabolite levels by rifampicin and fluconazole
- Potentiation of antihypertensive effects by concomitant use of hydrochlorothiazide
- Increase in serum potassium levels with potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, or salt substitutes
- Attenuation of antihypertensive effect by indomethacin
- Increased risk of renal impairment with certain drug combinations
Contraindications
- Pregnant women
- Patients hypersensitive to any component of the product
- Concomitant use with Aliskiren in patients with diabetes

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category D
- Risk to the fetus if administered during second or third trimesters
- Unknown excretion in human milk
- Potential adverse effects on nursing infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Reduced fetal renal function and increased fetal and neonatal morbidity and death during second and third trimesters
- Symptomatic hypotension in intravascularly volume-depleted patients
- Significantly increased plasma concentration in cirrhotic patients
- Changes in renal function including renal failure in renal impaired patients
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage adjustments in renal impairment
- Lower dose for patients with history of hepatic impairment
- May be administered with other antihypertensive agents
- Contraindications and warnings for specific conditions
