Description
- Indications:
- Treatment of major depressive episodes
- Treatment of panic disorder with or without agoraphobia
- Treatment of social anxiety disorder (social phobia)
- Treatment of generalised anxiety disorder
- Treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Pharmacology:
- SSRI
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor
- Pure S-enantiomer of citalopram
- Dosage:
- Maximum daily dose of 20 mg
- Usual dosage of 10 mg once daily for major depressive episodes
- Initial dose of 5 mg recommended for panic disorder
- Social anxiety disorder usual dosage of 10 mg once daily
- Generalised anxiety disorder initial dosage of 10 mg once daily
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder initial dosage of 10 mg once daily
- Administration:
- Administered once daily, morning or evening
- May be taken with or without food
- Interaction:
- Do not start SSRI until 2 weeks after stopping an MAOI
- Conversely, MAOI should not be started until at least a week after stopping an SSRI
- Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Escitalopram or Citalopram
- Concomitant use of escitalopram in patients taking monoamine oxidase/pimozide
- Side Effects:
- Less sedating than tricyclic antidepressants
- Fewer antimuscarinic and cardiotoxic effects than tricyclic antidepressants
- Gastrointestinal effects include nausea, vomiting, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation
- Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Carefully consider potential risks and benefits of treatment during the third trimester
- Excreted in human breast milk
- Precautions & Warnings:
- Use with caution in patients with epilepsy
- Avoid if poorly controlled epilepsy
- Discontinue if convulsions develop
- Use with caution in patients with history of mania, cardiac disease, diabetes mellitus
- Use in Special Populations:
- Elderly patients (>65 years of age) initial dose of 5 mg once daily
- Children and adolescents (<18 years) should not use Serotal
- No dosage adjustment necessary in patients with mild or moderate renal impairment
- Extra careful dose titration advised in patients with severely reduced hepatic function
- For poor metabolizers of CYP2C19, an initial dose of 5 mg daily is recommended
- Overdose Effects:
- Symptoms include dizziness, tremor, agitation, serotonin syndrome, convulsion, coma, nausea, vomiting, hypotension, tachycardia, QT interval prolongation, arrhythmia, electrolyte/fluid balance conditions
- Therapeutic Class:
- SSRIs & related anti-depressant drugs

- Store below 30°C temperature
- Protect from light & moisture
- Keep out of the reach of children
