Description
Reefcal-DX is indicated for the treatment & prevention of osteoporosis, osteomalacia, tetany, hypoparathyroidism, disorders of osteogenesis, inadequate intake of Calcium in childhood diet, rickets, pregnancy & lactation, elderly patients, pancreatitis, and phosphate binder in chronic renal failure.
Dosage
- Take one tablet once or twice daily with plenty of water or as directed by the physician.
- Dissolve 1 effervescent tablet in a glass of water to drink orally.
Composition
- Each tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1250 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 500 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 200 IU.
- Each DX tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate USP 1500 mg (Coral source) equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium & Vitamin D USP 400 IU.
- Each effervescent tablet contains: Calcium Carbonate (Coral source) USP 1500 mg equivalent to 600 mg of elemental Calcium and Vitamin D3 400 IU as Cholecalciferol USP.
Pharmacological Action
Calcium is useful for the prevention and treatment of Osteoporosis and associated fractures. Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones as it aids in Calcium absorption from the GI tract and stimulates bone formation. Clinical studies show that Calcium and vitamin D have synergistic effects on bone growth as well as in Osteoporosis and fracture prevention.
Interaction
Thiazide diuretics reduce the urinary excretion of calcium, corticosteroids reduce calcium absorption, ion exchange resins and laxatives may reduce vitamin D absorption, calcium carbonate may interfere with tetracycline absorption, and hypercalcemia may increase cardiac glycoside toxicity.

- Hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism
- Hypercalciuria and nephrolithiasis
- Hypersensitivity to the component of this preparation
- Severe renal insufficiencies
- Concomitant digoxin therapy

Pregnancy Lactation
- The daily intake should not exceed 1500 mg calcium and 600 IU cholecalciferol. Overdoses of calcium and vitamin D should be avoided as permanent hypercalcemia may have adverse effects on the developing fetus.
- Vitamin D3 passes into breast milk, considerations should be made when giving additional vitamin D to the child.
Precautions Warnings
- Monitor serum calcium levels and renal function during long-term treatment
- Caution in elderly patients on concomitant treatment with cardiac glycosides or diuretics
- Consideration for soft tissue calcification risk
- Caution in patients with severe renal insufficiency and sarcoidosis
- Risk of hypercalcemia in immobilized patients with osteoporosis
- Close monitoring of serum calcium levels and urinary calcium excretion with additional calcium or vitamin D doses
Overdose Effects
Hypervitaminosis D and hypercalcemia may lead to anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, muscle weakness, mental disturbances, polyuria, bone pain, and in severe cases, cardiac arrhythmias.
