Indications
- Treatment of androgenic alopecia in males and females
- Stabilisation of hair loss in patients with androgenic alopecia
- Treatment of alopecia areata
Pharmacology
- Stimulation of hair growth
- Increase in oxygen, blood, and nutrient supply to hair follicle
- Widening of blood vessels
- Inhibition of androgen hormone on hair follicles
- Absorption rate through the skin
Dosage and administration
- For external use only
- Application to clean and dry hair and scalp
- Twice daily application at 12-hour intervals
- Total daily application dose not to exceed 2 ml
- Best results achieved by allowing solution to remain on scalp for about 4 hours before washing
- Night-time application 2-4 hours before bedtime
- Not to be massaged into the scalp
- No use of hair dryer to speed up drying
- Not to be mixed with any hair oil
- Not to be used more than two times a day or taken orally
- Hand washing after application
- 0 4 months of twice-daily applications may be required to show hair growth
- Use for not less than 45 days to arrest hair fall
Interaction
- Not to be used with other topical agents altering stratum corneum barrier like tretinoin or dithranol
- Theoretical possibility of potentiating orthostatic hypotension caused by peripheral vasodilators
Contraindications
- Patients with cardiac abnormalities
- Children below 18 years of age
- Patients using occlusive dressings or other medicines on the scalp
- Patients with red, inflamed infection, or irritated or painful scalp (including psoriasis & sunburn)
Side effects
- Minor dermatological reactions
- Possible dermatitis or hypertrichosis in 0.1-5% of patients
Pregnancy and lactation
- Not to be used during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions and warnings
- Likelihood of causing scalp irritation
- Discontinue use if scalp irritation continues or worsens
Overdose effects
- Possibility of increased systemic absorption with higher-than-recommended doses applied to larger surface areas or areas other than the scalp
- No known cases of overdosage resulting from topical administration
- Signs and symptoms would primarily be cardiovascular effects associated with sodium and water retention, and tachycardia
- Management with appropriate diuretic therapy for fluid retention
- Control tachycardia with beta-adrenergic blocking agent
