Indications
- Treatment of dementia of the Alzheimer's type
- May be indicated in other types of dementia
Pharmacology
- Actions as an NMDA receptor antagonist
- Well absorbed after oral administration
- Excreted predominantly unchanged in urine
- Has a terminal elimination half-life of about 60-80 hours
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended maintenance dose for adults and older patients is 20 mg every day
- Upward titration with 5 mg per week over 3 weeks
- Dosage adjustment in renal impairment
- Not recommended for use in children below 18 years
Interaction
- Enhancement of effects of L-dopa, dopaminergic agonists, and anticholinergics
- Reduction of effects of barbiturates and neuroleptics
- Modification of effects of antispasmodic agents
- Not to be used with specific medications
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Memantine Hydrochloride or its excipients
