Indications
- Single infestations of hookworm (Ancylostoma, Necator)
- Mixed infestations of hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, whipworm, strongyloides, tapeworm, opisthorchi, hydatid
Description
- Benzimidazole anthelmintic
- Active against most nematodes and some cestodes
- Treatment of intestinal nematode infections
- Treatment of hydatid disease
- Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activity
- Inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization
Pharmacology
- Broad spectrum anthelmintic
- Vermicidal, ovicidal, and larvicidal activities
- Blocks glucose uptake in susceptible helminths
- Depletes energy level of helminths
- Exerts anthelmintic effect by blocking tubulin polymerization
- Extensively metabolized, probably in the liver
Dosage & Administration
- 400 mg single dose for various infestations
- 400 mg daily for 3 consecutive days for strongyloidiasis or taeniasis
- 200 mg recommended single dose for children of 1-2 years
- 400 mg twice daily for 28 days for hydatid disease
- 15 mg/kg body weight daily for patients less than 60 kg
Interaction
- No reported pharmacodynamic or pharmacokinetic interactions
Contraindications
- Not normally used in neonates
- Reduction of dose may be indicated in children weighing less than 10 kg
- Avoid in pregnancy and lactation
- No evidence for altering dose in renal, hepatic, or cardiac failure
