Indications

Pharmacology
- Activity against Gram-positive organisms
- Inhibition of cell wall formation in bacteria
- Resistance to hydrolysis by penicillinase
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Kills bacterial cell wall by interfering with peptidoglycan synthesis
Dosage
- Oral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Oral administration for severe infections: doubled dosage
- Parenteral administration for adults: 250 mg four times daily
- Parenteral administration for severe infections: doubled dosage
- Dosage for children (2-10 years): half of adult dose
- Dosage for children (Under 2 years): quarter of adult dose
Administration
- Oral administration to be taken 1 hour before meals
Interaction
- Concurrent use may result in increased levels in blood
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in penicillin hypersensitive patients
Side effects
- Common side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Other side effects: rashes, urticaria, purpura, fever, interstitial nephritis, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice
Pregnancy lactation
- US FDA Pregnancy Category B
- Caution advised during lactation
Precautions warnings
- Use with caution in patients with hepatic dysfunction
- Use with caution in patients with allergic diathesis
Special populations
- Consider reduction in dose in severe renal failure (creatinine clearance <10 ml/min)
