Indications

Mode of Action

  • Selective inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4
  • Relaxes bronchial smooth muscle
  • Inhibition of platelet activating factor (PAF)
  • Decreased affinities toward adenosine A1 and A2 receptors

Dosage and Administration

  • 200 mg tablet for elderly
  • 400 mg tablet for adults
  • >12 years of age: 10 ml syrup or 200 mg tablet
  • 6-12 years of age: 6-9 mg/kg body weight
  • 400 mg Doxophylline SR tablet for required daily dose
  • Consult physician for dosage

Interactions

  • Should not be administered with other xanthine preparations
  • Limit consumption of caffeine-containing beverages and food
  • Exercise caution with ephedrine or sympathomimetic drugs
  • Concurrent administration with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, etc. may affect hepatic clearance
  • Phenytoin, anticonvulsants, and cigarette smoking may influence clearance

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
  • Acute myocardial infarction
  • Hypotension
  • During lactation
