Description
- Imigra is indicated for prophylaxis of classic or common migraine, symptomatic treatment of vestibular vertigo, peripheral vascular disease, motion sickness, and refractory epilepsy resistant to conventional antiepileptic therapy. It is a selective calcium channel antagonist with antihistaminic and sedative properties.
Dosage & Administration
- Starting dose of 10 mg at night for migraine prophylaxis in patients less than 65 years of age, maintenance treatment with decreased dose, 10 mg twice daily for peripheral vascular disease, 10-20 mg daily for vertigo and motion sickness in adults, 5 mg daily for children over 40 kg, 15-20 mg daily for epileptic seizure in adults, 5-10 mg daily for children as add-on therapy.
Mode of Action
- Flunarizine is a difluorinated derivative of cinnarizine, a selective calcium channel antagonist that prevents cellular calcium overload, with antihistaminic and sedative properties, and 99% plasma protein binding affinity.
Interaction
- Possible interaction with oral contraceptives leading to galactorrhoea, and with hepatic enzyme inducers like Carbamazepine and Phenytoin increasing its metabolism, requiring a possible increase in Imigra dosage.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Flunarizine, history of depressive illness, pre-existing symptoms of Parkinson's disease or other extrapyramidal disorders.
Side Effects
- Drowsiness, fatigue, weight gain, increased appetite, depression (particularly in female patients with history of depressive illness), extrapyramidal symptoms (particularly in elderly patients), heartburn, nausea, gastralgia, insomnia, anxiety, galactorrhoea, dry mouth, muscle ache, skin rash.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established in pregnancy and lactation.
Precautions & Warnings
- May cause drowsiness aggravated by alcohol or other central nervous system depressants, caution against driving or hazardous tasks, not suited for aborting a migraine attack, may lead to extrapyramidal and depressive symptoms, reveal Parkinsonism especially in predisposed patients.
