Indications

  • Treatment of essential hypertension
  • Treatment of renal disease in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus

Pharmacology

  • Angiotensin II receptor antagonist
  • Blocks vasoconstricting and aldosterone-secreting effects

Dosage & Administration

  • Usual recommended initial and maintenance dose of 150 mg once daily
  • Can be taken with or without food
  • Consider initiation at 75 mg in haemodialysed patients and elderly over 75 years
  • Dose adjustment not usually necessary for the elderly
  • Not recommended for use in children and adolescents

Interaction

  • Caution with diuretics and other antihypertensive agents
  • Avoid concomitant use with potassium supplements and potassium-sparing diuretics
  • Careful monitoring of serum lithium levels if coadministered with lithium
  • Attenuation of antihypertensive effect with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

Contraindications

  • Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes and renal impairment
  • Pregnancy
