Indications
- Psoriasis (excluding widespread plaque psoriasis)
- Recalcitrant dermatoses
- Lichen planus
- Discoid lupus erythematosus
- Skin conditions not responding to less potent steroids
Composition
- Clobetasol Propionate Cream: Each gram cream contains Clobetasol Propionate BP 0.5 mg (0.05% w/w)
- Clobetasol Propionate Ointment: Each gram ointment contains Clobetasol Propionate BP 0.5 mg (0.05% w/w)
- Clobetasol Propionate Scalp Application: Each gram lotion contains Clobetasol Propionate BP 0.5 mg (0.05% w/w)
- Clobetasol Propionate Shampoo: Each gram shampoo contains Clobetasol Propionate BP 0.5 mg (0.05% w/w)
- Clobetasol Propionate Lotion: Each gram lotion contains Clobetasol Propionate BP 0.5 mg (0.05% w/w)
- Clobetasol Propionate Spray: Each gram spray contains Clobetasol Propionate BP 0.5 mg (0.05% w/w)
Pharmacology
Very potent topical corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory, antipruritic and vasoconstrictive properties
Dosage
- Cream, Ointment: Apply twice daily to affected skin areas, limited to 2 consecutive weeks
- Spray: Apply once or twice daily to affected areas of the scalp, not exceeding 50 ml weekly
- Shampoo: Apply once a day to dry scalp, limited to 4 consecutive weeks and not exceeding 50 g per week
- Scalp Solution: Apply once or twice daily to affected areas of the scalp, not exceeding 50 ml weekly
Administration
Cutaneous. Creams suitable for moist or weeping surfaces, while ointments are suitable for dry, lichenified or scaly lesions
Interaction
Co-administered drugs inhibiting CYP3A4 can lead to increased systemic exposure of corticosteroids
Contraindications
- Rosacea, acne vulgaris and perioral dermatitis
- Hypersensitivity to the preparation
- Infections caused by fungi or bacteria
- Dermatoses in children under one year of age
Side Effects
- Prolonged use may result in systemic absorption
- Local atrophic changes in the skin
- Pustular form of psoriasis
- Pigmentation changes and hypertrichosis
Pregnancy & Lactation
Limited data in pregnant women, caution advised during pregnancy and lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid long-term continuous therapy, particularly in infants and children
- Risk of atrophic changes on the face
- Care required when applying near eyes
- Hazardous in psoriasis, careful patient supervision is important

Overdose Effects
Acute overdosage is unlikely, features of hypercortisolism may occur in chronic over-dosage
