Caprolycin 2 gm/10 ml (Injection)

Indications

• Treats excessive postoperative bleeding
• Reduces blood loss in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting
• Treats the overdose and/or toxic effects of thrombolytic pharmacologic agents

Pharmacology

• Exerts fibrinolysis-inhibitory effects
• Inhibits plasminogen activators
• Exhibits antiplasmin activity

Dosage & Administration

• Must be adjusted to individual cases according to the severity of the hemorrhagic event
• Cleared rapidly by renal route, requiring repeated administration every 4-6 hours
• Average daily dose is 8-16 gm
• Equally effective by oral and intravenous administration
• Intravenous administration recommended for cases of particular severity or to achieve high blood concentration quickly
• Continued administration until complete cessation of all symptoms

Contraindications

• Not to be used when there is evidence of an active intravascular clotting process
• Distinction must be made between primary fibrinolysis and disseminated intravascular coagulation before administering
• Specific tests can be applied to differentiate between the two conditions
• Should not be used in the presence of disseminated intravascular coagulation without concomitant heparin

Side Effects

• Mild muscle pain or weakness
• Headache, tired feeling
• Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea
• Decreased amount of semen in men when having an orgasm
• Stuffy nose, watery eyes
• Vision problems, ringing in ears
• Mild skin rash

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category C
• Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted
• Potential for causing fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman

Precautions & Warnings

• Safety and efficacy not established in patients younger than 18 years
