Indications
- Treatment of essential hypertension
- Treatment of renal disease in patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus
Pharmacology
- Angiotensin II receptor antagonist
- Blocks vasoconstricting and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II
Dosage & Administration
- Usual recommended initial and maintenance dose of 150 mg once daily
- Can be taken with or without food
- Dose adjustment for elderly and paediatric patients
Interaction
- Risk of hypotension with high dose diuretics
- Not recommended with potassium-sparing diuretics
- Potential interaction with lithium and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Contraindications
- Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes and renal impairment
- Pregnancy

- Elevated serum creatinine
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Contraindicated in second and third trimesters of pregnancy
- Not recommended during lactation
