Description
- Ascova is used to treat bronchial asthma, bronchospasm, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component. It is a bronchodilator in the therapeutic class of methyl xanthine derivatives. The active ingredient, Doxophylline, relaxes bronchial smooth muscle by selectively inhibiting phosphodiesterase 4.
Indications
- Bronchial asthma
- Bronchospasm
- Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
- Pulmonary disease with spastic bronchial component
Mode of Action
- Selective inhibition of phosphodiesterase 4
- Relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle
Dosage & Administration
- 400mg tablet for adults, 200mg tablet for elderly, and 10ml syrup or 200mg tablet for children above 12 years
- Doxophylline SR tablet for a required daily dose of 400mg
Interaction
- Not to be administered with other xanthine preparations
- Caution with ephedrine or other sympathomimetic drugs
- Possible interactions with erythromycin, TAO, lincomycin, clindamycin, allopurinol, cimetidine, influenza vaccine, propanolol, phenytoin, and other anticonvulsants
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to the drug or other xanthine derivatives
- Acute myocardial infarction
- Hypotension
- Lactation

- Extrasystoles

- Hyperglycemia (rare)
- Albuminuria (rare)
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias and tonic-clonic seizure in case of overdose
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Careful evaluation of risk-benefit ratio during pregnancy
- Contraindicated during lactation
- No interference with pre and postnatal growth in animal tests
Precautions & Warnings
- Monitoring of blood levels in patients with factors that reduce hepatic clearance
- Caution in patients with cardiac disease, hypertension, severe hypoxemia, hyperthyroidism, chronic corpulmonale, congestive heart failure, liver disease, peptic ulcer, and renal impairment
- Slower clearance in patients with congestive heart failure
Overdose Effects
- Severe cardiac arrhythmias
- Tonic-clonic seizure
- Discontinuation of treatment may be necessary
- Symptomatic treatment of cardiovascular collapse in case of overdose
