Pharmacological properties

  • Dopamine antagonist
  • Gastroprokinetic action
  • Blocks dopamine receptors

Dosage and administration

  • Usual oral dose:
    • Adults: 10-20 mg every 6-8 hours
    • Children: 2-4 ml suspension/10 kg body weight every 6-8 hours
  • Rectal suppositories:
    • Adults: 30-60 mg every 4-8 hours
    • Children: 30 mg maximum daily dose in children weighing 10 to 25 kg

  • Dyspeptic symptom complex
  • Delayed gastric emptying
  • Acute nausea and vomiting
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Radiological studies

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity
  • Neonates
  • Gastrointestinal hemorrhage
  • Mechanical obstruction or perforation
  • Prolactin releasing pituitary tumor

Side effects

  • Transient intestinal cramps
  • Extrapyramidal phenomena
  • Hyperprolactinaemia
  • Allergic reactions

Pregnancy and lactation

  • Use in first trimester if justified
  • Excreted in breast milk
  • Not recommended for nursing mothers unless benefits outweigh risks
