Dexodel Plus (20 mg+10 mg+2.5 mg)/5 ml (Syrup)

Indications

• Temporarily relieves symptoms of common cold
• Temporarily relieves symptoms of hay fever
• Relieves cough due to minor throat or bronchial irritation
• Relieves runny nose
• Relieves sneezing
• Relieves itching of the nose or throat
• Relieves itchy, watery eyes
• Relieves nasal congestion
• Reduces swelling of nasal passages

Pharmacology

• Combination of antitussive, decongestant, and antihistamine agent
• Dextromethorphan - non-narcotic antitussive agent
• Phenylephrine - decongestant that shrinks blood vessels
• Triprolidine - provides relief in conditions triggered by histamine release

Dosage

• Adults & Children 12 years and older: 1 teaspoonful (5 ml) every 4 hours
• Children 6 to under 12 years: ½ teaspoonful (2.5 ml) every 4 hours
• Children 2 to 6 years: to be used with caution as advised by physician
• Children below 2 years: not to be used

Administration

• Take with or without food
• Measure liquid doses carefully

Interaction

• Avoid taking certain MAO inhibitors
• Exercise caution with antihistamines, antispasmodics, beta blockers, and more

Contraindications

• Avoid in patients with liver disease
• Avoid in asthmatic patients
• Avoid in patients taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors or within 2 weeks from stopping such treatment
• Contraindicated in patients with severe hypertension or severe coronary artery disease

Side Effects

• May cause drowsiness
• May cause dizziness
• May cause constipation
• Other potential side effects include GIT discomfort, transient hypertension, dry mouth, restlessness, palpitations, allergic reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Best avoided in pregnancy and lactation

• Avoid driving or operating machinery when affected
• Use with caution in various conditions such as epilepsy, prostatic hypertrophy, glaucoma, hepatic disease, hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and more

Overdose Effects

• Hospital admission strongly advised in cases of overdose
• May produce respiratory depression, paranoid psychosis, delusions, hallucinations, and convulsion
• Treatment should include emptying the stomach by aspiration or gastric lavage
