Indications
- Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis
- Caused by susceptible strains of specific organisms
- Aerobic Gram-Positive Bacteria
- Aerobic Gram-Negative Bacteria
Pharmacology
- Inhibition of DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV
- Different mechanism of action from aminoglycoside, macrolide, and tetracycline antibiotics
- No crossresistance with aforementioned classes of antibiotics
- Resistance development via multiple-step mutations
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage regimen for bacterial conjunctivitis
- Different dosage for adults and children
- Specific dosage for different days of treatment
Interaction
- No specific drug interaction studies conducted
- Systemic administration of quinolones may elevate plasma concentrations of theophylline
- Potential interference with the metabolism of caffeine
- Enhancement of effects of oral anticoagulant warfarin
- Transient elevations in serum creatinine in patients receiving systemic cyclosporine concomitantly
Contraindications
- Not to be used in patients with hypersensitivity to Gatifloxacin or other quinolones
- Avoid injection subconjunctivally or introduction into the anterior chamber of the eye

- Frequently reported adverse events include conjunctival irritation and increased lacrimation

- Caution advised during lactation due to unknown excretion in human milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Avoid wearing contact lenses with bacterial conjunctivitis
- Avoid contaminating the applicator tip with material from the eye, fingers or other source
