Indications
- Short-term management of post-operative pain
- Relief of pain, inflammation, and light sensitivity after ocular surgery
- Decrease in eye inflammation or redness caused by seasonal allergies
Description
- Belongs to the pyrrolo-pyrrole group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
- Inhibits synthesis of prostaglandins
- Associated with the S-form
- Linear pharmacokinetic property
- Highly protein bound
- Metabolized in the liver
- Excreted in urine
Pharmacology
- Potent analgesic of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Inhibits the cyclooxygenase enzyme system
- Demonstrates minimal anti-inflammatory effect at analgesic dose
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet recommended dose: 10 mg every 4-6 hours for up to 7 days
- Injection recommended dose: varies by age, weight, and method of administration
- Eye drops recommended dose: 1 drop in each eye 4 times daily
Interaction
- Other NSAIDs or aspirin increase side effects
- Anti-coagulants enhance anti-coagulant effect
- Beta blocker reduces anti-hypertensive effect
- ACE inhibitors increase risk of renal impairment
- Methotrexate enhances toxicity of methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ketorolac or other NSAIDs
- Children under 16 years of age
- Prophylactic analgesic before surgery
