Description
Airup is indicated for prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma, acute prevention of Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction (EIB), and relief of symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis (AR) including Seasonal & Perennial Allergic Rhinitis.
Dosage
Adults and adolescents with asthma or seasonal allergic rhinitis should take Montelukast 10 mg tablet once daily. Pediatric patients should take Montelukast 5 mg tablet once daily (6 to 14 years), 4 mg tablet once daily (2 to 5 years), or 4 mg oral granules once daily (6 months to 5 years).
Pharmacology
- Montelukast is a selective and orally active leukotriene receptor antagonist that inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene receptor
- Cysteinyl leukotrienes are released from various cells and are correlated with the pathophysiology of asthma & allergic rhinitis
Interaction
Airup has been administered with other therapies routinely used in the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma without evidence of clinical adverse interactions. No dosage adjustment is required when used with a wide range of commonly prescribed drugs.
Contraindications
Montelukast is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any component of this product.
Side effects
- Common: Diarrhoea, fever, gastrointestinal discomfort, headache, nausea, vomiting, skin reactions, upper respiratory tract infection
- Uncommon: Akathisia, anxiety, arthralgia, depression, dizziness, drowsiness, malaise, muscle complaints
- Rare: Angioedema, concentration impaired, disorientation, hallucination, hepatic disorders, memory loss, palpitations, tremor
Pregnancy lactation
Montelukast should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Caution should be exercised when given to a nursing mother.
Precautions warnings
- Airup is not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks
- Therapy with Airup can be continued during acute exacerbations of asthma
- Airup should not be abruptly substituted for inhaled or oral corticosteroids
Overdose effects
The most frequently occurring adverse experiences in the majority of overdosage reports were consistent with the safety profile of Airup, and supportive measures should be employed in the event of overdose.
